OCS July 2010 Updates – CU6 Issue and Resolution

UPDATE: The July CU6 updates have been removed from the download site due to issues with the Response Group Service. If you do not use the Response Group Service there is no need to uninstall this update. If you do use RGS and are experiencing issues simply restart the Response Group Service to resolve issues.

Microsoft has just released Cumulative Update 6 for Office Communications Server 2007 R2. I won’t go into the specific KB updates included with CU6 which can be found here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968802/

The problem comes after running ServiceUpdateInstaller.exe which downloads and applies the necessary updates to the OCS servers based on which roles/tools are installed. If you have applied the updates on the Front End Server(s), the Office Communications Server Front End Service will fail to start and will show in the services mmc as Starting and RTCSrv.exe will show in task manager however it will not accept connections to the MCU.

You will see errors in the event log and several pointed to an issue with the version of the database schema which prompted me to install the OCS2007-dbupgrade.msi which is also included with in the kb article but requires a separate update process (OCS2007-dbupgrade.msi POOLNAME=poolfqdn). After applying the database upgrade and restarting OCS services the Front End Service started normally.

Here is a link to the OCS2009-DBUpgrade.msi
